What is measured
The scanner strips <script>, <style> and <noscript> from the homepage /, takes the main content region (<main>, otherwise the body) and reads its first 1000 characters. Pass when a 40-320 character paragraph appears there before the first <h2> — an element whose class or id contains summary, lede or intro also counts; partial when a summary exists but starts after the first <h2> or falls outside 40-320 characters; fail when the first 1000 characters of main content hold no such paragraph. The llms.txt contract asks for this short summary at the top of every page.
Reproduce it yourself
You do not have to take our word for any of this. Run the same measurement against your own domain:
DOMAIN="https://example.com"
curl -sL "$DOMAIN/" | perl -0777 -ne 's{<(script|style|noscript)[^>]*>.*?</\1>}{}gsi; m{<main[^>]*>(.*?)</main>}si and $_=$1; s/<[^>]*>/ /g; s/\s+/ /g; print substr($_,0,260),"\n"'
The fix
This is the artifact to ship. It is the complete change, not a description of one.
<main>
<h1>Token efficiency for agent-readable pages</h1>
<p class="summary">
Content-to-markup ratio is the share of a page's bytes an agent can actually read: below 15%
most of your HTML is scaffolding, and every wrapper div is billed to someone's context window.
</p>
<h2>How the ratio is measured</h2>
<p>We strip script, style and template blocks, remove the remaining tags and divide the visible
characters by the raw HTML size.</p>
